New technology can eliminate the need for repeat surgery

Electrospinning is the new affordable regenerative healthcare solution that can ensure faster recovery of bone fractures with lower health care costs.

Bone fractures are costly and inconvenient to patients as well as society

Research has shown that people in the Northwestern part of Europe are more likely to develop degenerative bone disorders, such as osteoporosis, compared to people in the rest of the EU.

The sad consequence is that this region has the highest number of bone fractures within Europe. As you can imagine, bone fractures are costly and inconvenient to patients as well as society.

New affordable regenerative healthcare solutions can ensure a faster recovery with lower health care costs. This is what the “Biofabrication of Orthopaedics in a New Era” or “BONE” project is all about.

Bone implants as an attractive alternative to repeat surgeries

A European transnational consortium develops bone implants as an alternative to repeat surgeries, prolonged medication use, and donor tissue implementation.

The consortium is working specifically with 3D scaffold implants created by electrospinning. The 3D scaffolds can improve the surface properties of the implants and thereby support the regeneration of skeletal bones, enhance recovery times, and reduce health care costs.

Together, the partners are developing the technology to produce the implants, and they are establishing a roadmap to manufacture and market them.

BONE is a European transnational consortium led by Maastricht University (UM). It is financed by the Interreg NWE program, a cross-border partnership that is financially supported by the European Fund for Regional Development.

We are participating with our ultrafast lasers for the development of laser-assisted electrospinning.
